Pride is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. On June 28, 1970, on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Thousands of LGBTQ+ people gathered to commemorate Stonewall and demonstrate for equal rights. The events of Stonewall and the liberation movements that followed were a direct result of prior decades of LGBTQ+ activism and organizing. We founded the first Pride event in Fairborn in 2021. Now, it is a city wide, annual event that brings us and our community together.

Why Do We Have Pride?
Pride exists because LGBTQ+ people have always existed and will never go away! As anti-trans legislation continues to spread across the U.S. in 2025, with over 351 bills introduced in 41 states, it’s clear that the fight for trans rights is far from over. These bills seek to strip trans people of access to healthcare, education, and even the right to exist publicly. This hostility reminds us why Pride began—not as a celebration, but as an act of defiance led by activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who fought back during Stonewall and co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) to support trans and queer people. Pride is about honoring this legacy, remembering those lost to HIV/AIDS, taking care of each other, and not hiding who we are.
Today, Pride stands as a beacon of solidarity against oppression. In the face of legislation like Ohio’s SB1, which targets diversity, equity, and inclusion in education, we gather to show that our communities will not be erased. Pride is more than a celebration; it is a declaration that lesbian, gay, trans and queer lives matter, that we belong, and that we will continue to resist systemic attempts to silence us. It is a call to action to protect, support, and uplift each other!
